INEC Chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmoud Yakubu, has insisted, that the All Progressives Congress, APC, will not field candidates for the 2019 general elections in Zamfara state.
Yakubu stated this on the sideline of the opening of a two-day validation workshop entitled “Study on the cost of elections in ECOWAS Region.” which held in Abuja yesterday October 15th.

“We have issued a statement on Zamfara and nothing has changed. We stand by the statement that we issued,” he said.

The electoral commission in a letter to APC, said the party was barred from fielding candidates for governorship, National Assembly and state assembly elections because it failed to comply with Sections 87 and 31 of the Electoral Act of 2010.

Parties, according to the act, were expected to comply with the timetable and schedule of INEC, which says the conduct of primaries must be held between August 18 and October  7. INEC said it received reports from its Zamfara office, indicating that no primaries were conducted in the state “notwithstanding that our officials were fully mobilised and deployed.”

APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, in reacting to the claim, said there was no truth to INEC's statement.

Oshiomole insisted that the party organised primaries in Zamfara within the stipulated time, candidates emerged and they would be fielded in the 2019 election. Oshiomole added that the claim by INEC that no primaries were conducted could only be referring to its officials’ observation that actual voting did not take place. The APC chairman said that conduct of primaries was not the only mode prescribed for producing candidates in the electoral act, 2010 (as amended).

"The contents of your said letter seem to conclude that no primaries were conducted by the APC in Zamfara State. We wish to state emphatically that nothing can be farther from the actual situation in Zamfara State. Kindly find a comprehensive report from the Zamfara Electoral Committee of the All Progressives Congress and signed by all the members on the conduct of primary elections for the Zamfara State held between 6th & 7th October, 2018. The summary of the report, as you will find, is that following the high level of friction, disagreements and threatened violence by various political camps before the primaries, all the aspirants met at City King Hotel, Gusau, to find a truce.

“After hours of intense horse-trading, a consensus was reached within the spirit and context of the Electoral Act and the constitution of our party on the basis of which a list was produced which was confirmed/affirmed by all delegates present. This was done in strict compliance with section 87 (6) of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as Amended).

“Therefore, the claim in your letter under reference that ‘no primaries were conducted by your party in the state, notwithstanding that our officials were fully mobilized and deployed’ could only be referring to their observation that actual voting did not take place, which is not the only mode prescribed for producing candidates in the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended). We, therefore, affirm that indeed primaries took place in Zamfara State.” Oshiomole's letter to the commission read.

How To Add Custom Robots.txt File in Blogger?

In one of my previous posts, I had discussed Custom Robots Header Tags Settings for blogger.
If you have read that post then I hope you guys are aware of its importance in search rankings.
Today, I am back with a very useful and must aware blogging term that is Robots.txt.
In blogger it is known as Custom Robots.txt that means now you can customize this file according to your choice.
In today's tutorial, we will discuss this term in deep and come to know about its use and benefits. I will also tell you how to add custom robots.txt file in blogger.
So let's start the guide.

What is Robots.txt?

Robots.txt is a text file which contains few lines of simple code.
It is saved on the website or blog's server which instruct the web crawlers on how to index and crawl your blog in the search results.
That means you can restrict any web page on your blog from web crawlers so that it can't get indexed in search engines like your blog labels page, your demo page or any other pages that are not as important to get indexed.
Always remember that search crawlers scan the robots.txt file before crawling any web page.
Each blog hosted on blogger has its default robots.txt file which is something look like this:
User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
Disallow:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /search
Allow: /
Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=UPDATED

Explanation

This code is divided into three sections. Let's first study each of them after that we will learn how to add custom robots.txt file in blogspot blogs.

User-agent: Mediapartners-Google

This code is for Google Adsense robots which help them to serve better ads on your blog. Either you are using Google Adsense on your blog or not simply leave it as it is.

User-agent: *

This is for all robots marked with asterisk (*). In default settings our blog's labels links are restricted to indexed by search crawlers that means the web crawlers will not index our labels page links because of below code.

Disallow: /search

That means the links having keyword search just after the domain name will be ignored. See below example which is a link of label page named SEO.
https://www.bloggertipstricks.com/search/label/SEO
And if we remove Disallow: /search from the above code then crawlers will access our entire blog to index and crawl all of its content and web pages.
Here Allow: / refers to the Homepage that means web crawlers can crawl and index our blog's homepage.

Disallow Particular Post

Now suppose if we want to exclude a particular post from indexing then we can add below lines in the code.
Disallow: /yyyy/mm/post-url.html
Here yyyy and mm refers to the publishing year and month of the post respectively. For example if we have published a post in year 2013 in month of March then we have to use below format.
Disallow: /2013/03/post-url.html
To make this task easy, you can simply copy the post URL and remove the blog name from the beginning.

Disallow Particular Page

If we need to disallow a particular page then we can use the same method as above. Simply copy the page URL and remove blog address from it which will something look like this:
Disallow: /p/page-url.html

Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=UPDATED

This code refers to the sitemap of our blog. By adding sitemap link here we are simply optimizing our blog's crawling rate.
Means whenever the web crawlers scan our robots.txt file they will find a path to our sitemap where all the links of our published posts present.
Web crawlers will find it easy to crawl all of our posts.
Hence, there are better chances that web crawlers crawl all of our blog posts without ignoring a single one.
Note: This sitemap will only tell the web crawlers about the recent 25 posts. If you want to increase the number of link in your sitemap then replace default sitemap with below one. It will work for first 500 recent posts.
Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
If you have more than 500 published posts in your blog then you can use two sitemaps like below:
Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500

Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=500&max-results=1000

How to Check Your Robots.txt File?

You can check this file on your blog by adding /robots.txt at the end of your blog URL in the web browser. For example:
http://www.yourblogurl.blogspot.com/robots.txt
Once you visit the robots.txt file URL you will see the entire code which you are using in your custom robots.txt file.
See below image.

I need answers ASAP! My parents are experiencing very trying times. The family has next to nothing when it comes to finance. To feed has become a problem and I know my parents are doing all they can to see that we survive. Yesterday, the landlord came for the 3rd time this year to ask for his rent. The thing with the landlord is, he lacks maturity when asking for his money. He starts to shout from the gate, then when he gets into the compound he starts calling out my dad’s name provocatively and says he’s not leaving, if he doesn’t get his money. My parents would go out to beg him, that’s when the shouting doubles. I get so embarrassed every time he does that. So, yesterday, a co-tenant after the landlord had performed his drama saw me going out for my JAMB class, when he stopped me and said he had something to tell me that would help me. I was interested until he said he could give us the money for the rent if I become his girlfriend and have s*x with him every time he wants. I was very disgusted at first but then I remembered that the landlord would still come again and the embarrassment worsens with each coming. Please, what should I do? Drop Your Comments Below.
Federal Government says it has disbursed about N2 billion to more than 14, 000 poor people in Kwara since 2016 under its National Cash Transfer (CCT) programme.

Hajia Aminah Yahaya, the Unit Head of the programme in Kwara, Said this on Wednesday in Ilorin at a stakeholders’ meeting on Co-Responsibility Selection.

Yahaya explained that the scheme, which started in Kwara two years ago, had beneficiaries across the 16 local government councils of the state.

According to her, the beneficiaries from Offa were able to save N15 million out of what people would describe as meagre, which had been disbursed for the businesses.

She said that Kwara was among the first eight pilot states of the cash transfer programme.

On the Co-Responsibility Programme, she explained it was a top up programme to the existing cash transfer to be assisted by the World Bank.

She said that beneficiaries of the top up cash transfer would receive N5, 000 monthly, but linked it to the participation in activities focused on human capital development.

In her presentation, Mrs Temitope Sinkaiye, the National Coordinator of the National Conditional Cash Transfer, said that programme was to address challenges and deficiencies of the conditional cash transfer.

“Conditional Cash Transfer supports the poor and vulnerable to improve consumption and develop savings skills.
“The overall objectives is aimed at reducing poverty, preventing the vulnerable households from falling further down the poverty line and building their resilience to withstand shocks.

“Top-up Cash transfer incorporates benefits linked to the participation of selected households in activities focused on human capital development and sustainable environment through adherence to specified conditionality known as co-responsibility”, she said.

She said that Kwara was expected to pick one of the co-responsibility areas which were Health, Education, Nutrition and Environment.
According to her, beneficiaries of the top-up will be required to fulfill certain co-responsibility as part of efforts to address the identified challenges.

“The co-responsibility shall be state specific, tailored to the deficiencies and capacities in each state.

“Each state shall depend on their conditions and priorities, choose their co-responsibility area,” she explained.

She added that the programme would ensure increase in children school enrolment and attendance, improve child nutrition, address environmental hazards to improve productive assets and improve utilization of health facilities for ante and post-natal care with child immunization.

She said that the beneficiaries would be trained to build their capacities for enhanced quality of life and also ensure that they made use of services and facilities available to bring about change in behaviour in the area of concern.

President Muhammadu Buhari has released a new Executive Order into law.

The new order is meant to regulate money laundering and tax evasion.
The President released the new Executive Order number eight, tagged “Voluntary Offshore Assets Regularization Scheme, VOARS,” on Wednesday.

The new Executive Order (008) took effect from Monday, October 8, 2018, the day it was signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu, made this known in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

Nigerian taxpayers who hold offshore assets and incomes are expected to, within a period of 12 months, declare voluntarily those assets and pay taxes on them by the order.

When they do this, they should expect to derive certain specified benefits.

According to the order, “any taxpayer who truthfully and voluntarily complies with the conditions of the scheme, pays a one-time levy of 35 percent on the total offshore assets or pays all outstanding taxes, penalties and interest after forensic audit of their offshore assets and income shall obtain immunity from prosecution for tax offenses and offences related to offshore assets, among others.

“Equally, failure of any defaulting taxpayer to take advantage of this scheme shall, at the expiration of the scheme result in investigation and enforcement procedures concerning offshore assets anywhere in the world pursuant to information now readily available through automatic exchange of information between Nigeria and foreign countries.”

In accordance with the new order, the Federal Government, through the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice will set up a VOARS in Switzerland for all categories of taxpayers who have defaulted in the declaration of their offshore assets, payment of taxes due and collectible subject to the fulfillment of the terms and conditions as stipulated in the order, or any other subsequent complementary regulations that follow.

To avoid the abuse of this process, the Federal Government makes clear that the “scheme is open to all persons, entities, and their intermediaries holding offshore assets and are in default of their tax obligations in any way, including those who are not already under investigation by law enforcement agencies in Nigeria or any other country and have not been charged with any crimes including theft of public funds or obtaining offshore assets through corrupt practices.”

In signing the order, President Buhari noted that under the Nigerian law, every citizen has the duty to declare his or her income and assets and pay taxes on them but regretted that this, in most instances, had not been the case.

“The sad reality is that efforts to recover these taxes from defaulters through litigation are often frustrated by the complications caused by the change in the character and nature of such assets, insufficient financial intelligence, long delays in courts, among several other reasons,” the President said.

President Buhari is optimistic that the new scheme will help to facilitate the expedient regularization of offshore assets connected to Nigeria and lead to “a new expanded tax base for the Federal Government, and also fund the Nigeria Infrastructure Fund in Switzerland.”

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, said on Wednesday that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission would soon embark on a massive prosecution of suspects found to be responsible for the instability of the naira against some foreign currencies.
The AGF said this while addressing journalists on the issues affecting the foreign exchange market in the country, at his office in Abuja.
Malami restated the resolve of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to resist the call for the devaluation of the naira.
“In the exercise of the powers of my office and in consonance with the policy thrust of this administration, I have, therefore, directed the EFCC and other relevant security agencies to further investigate and confirm the information already available,” Malami said.
Responding to a question, Malami said investigations of the suspected foreign exchange suspects had been completed, adding that that the EFCC would embark on ‘massive prosecution’ soon.
“We have passed the stage of warning. We have passed the stage of investigation. We have gone far in terms of gathering the evidence. We are at the stage of embarking on massive prosecution,” Malami said.
Though the minister did not give the exact identities of the suspects, he said they included ‘regulators that are responsible for giving protection to the naira but have failed in their responsibilities and ended up protecting businessmen and other culprits involved in shady forex business’.
He said some of the ongoing sharp practices causing the instability of the naira included round-tripping of foreign exchange sourced from the inter-bank market, rendition of false foreign exchange utilisation data, non-repatriation of proceeds and use of foreign exchange for ineligible purposes.
He also linked the forex crisis to ‘consumption of foreign exchange transactions with inadequate, expired and or forged documents; and failure to report foreign exchange end users who default in the submission of required documents’.
He said the applicable law to prosecute the suspects included Banks and other Financial Institutions Act 1991 (as amended in 1997, 1998 and 2002); the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 and the Foreign Exchange Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1995.
He said the priority of the Buhari administration included efforts aimed at diversification of the economy and promotion of ‘greater accountability within the system through the blocking of all revenue loopholes’ and ‘a robust asset-recovery process’.
He said, “In the light of the current economic realities, it clear to all objective and discerning observers that there is an urgent need to review our foreign market from the perspective of the degree of compliance with extant laws and regulations due to certain disturbing developments which increasingly are confirming the initial suspicion of government that the current state of the naira is not the result of neutral factors.
“On the contrary, and indeed on a very sad not, it is apparent that our national currency is being deliberately undermined by carefully-orchestrated criminal conspiracies and manipulation by unscrupulous elements hiding under the cloak of so-called ‘market forces’.”
The minister said while the crash of the naira against the dollar and other key foreign currencies could be ‘directly traceable to declining crude oil prices arising from a supply glut in the global oil market’, the nefarious speculative activities had exerted further pressure on naira exchange.
He said the speculative activities had ‘created a very wide artificial differential between the aforesaid two rates which are now being exploited by unscrupulous individuals and institutions’.
He said, “Accordingly, the differential has given rise to sharp practices and rent- seeking activities by these entities that run contrary to the various provisions of the laws governing the conduct of the foreign exchange market and our money-laundering regime.”

The Federal Government is currently working to expose another 11,000 ghost workers on its payroll in its second batch of staff audit.
This is coming shortly after the government deleted 23,000 ghost workers from its payroll and saving the nation N2.29bn per month.
The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Wednesday at the end of a meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
She was joined at the post-FEC briefing by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal.
The minister said her ministry was using what she called computer techniques to investigate the 11,000 affected cases.
She said as soon as the cases were resolved, Nigerians would be informed of the amount saved and the number of names removed again from the payroll.
Adeosun said, “On the issue of the ghost workers, of the 23,000 that we had removed, our payroll has reduced by N2.29bn per month.
“The update on that is that we are now investigating another potential 11,000.
“Again, we are using computer techniques to identify those who we need to investigate.
“So we are now looking at the second batch and as we resolve those cases, we will inform you of the amount saved and the number of people removed.”
The minister added that the FEC had approved what he called the presidential initiative on continuous audit of Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
Adeosun said the initiative would allow government to extend the work beyond payroll to other areas of expenditure.
According to her, the World Bank has indicated its readiness to support Nigeria in this initiative, noting that it would take about six months to get the required legislation through.
She added, “The FEC deliberated extensively on the need for this and agreed that the control framework over finance and spending of government’s money needed to be strengthened especially in anticipation of the approval of the budget, which is an extended expenditure.
“If we don’t strengthen our controls, then there is a risk that money would leak or be applied to the wrong things and therefore, the ability to go into various agencies without notice and check and do audits and updates to make sure that public money is being spent in accordance with our expectations and objectives.
“FEC approved the setting up of this initiative effectively using an executive order to create internal audit to enable us to continue this work and to extend it to everywhere that federal money is being spent or received so that we can have better oversight.”
Adeosun said the government would not carry out additional recruitment for the exercise.
She said it would use existing members of staff and qualified accountants within the Office of the Accountant General as well as the federal civil service and redeploy them to carry out this function.

 Image result for electricity
The highly pronounced power failures across the country in the past few days may worsen following a partial system collapse that occurred on Tuesday, and the continuous drop in electricity generation due to what the government says is the vandalism of pipelines that supply gas to the power plants.
As a result, power generation dropped to 1,580.6 megawatts on Wednesday.
Data from the Nigeria Electricity System Operator as well as information from senior officials of the different electricity distribution companies confirmed that power generation plummeted massively on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The officials noted that this resulted in the reduction of the electricity load allocated to the Discos, stressing that this was why many parts of the country had been recording blackouts in the past few days.
It was learnt that the partial system collapse that occurred on Tuesday happened at the Shiroro Power Plant and dragged down electricity generation to as low as 1,233.4MW from a peak of 3,207.7MW recorded on the same day.
Data from NESO showed that by 9.48am on Wednesday, power generation was 1,580.6MW, with the Ikeja Electric getting 237.09MW; Abuja, 181.77MW; Eko, 173.87MW; Benin, 142.25MW; and Enugu, 142.25MW.
Others are Ibadan, 205.48MW; Jos, 86.93MW; Kano, 126.45MW; Kaduna, 126.45MW; Port Harcourt, 102.74MW; and Yola, 55.32MW.
One of our correspondents gathered that prior to the partial collapse of the system, the Abuja, Ikeja and Eko distribution firms were getting over 350MW each to meet the power needs of a considerable number of their customers.
In fact, it was learnt that the normal baseline allocation for the Abuja Disco was 450MW, but on Wednesday, the firm got 181.77MW around 9.48am, according to data from NESO, and this further dropped to 131.77MW by 1.25pm.
On reason for the slump in electricity generation, officials at the power arm of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing told one of our correspondents that the same old issue of gas pipeline vandalism had continued to pose challenge to adequate electricity generation and distribution.
An official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Gas is vital for power generation and most of the electricity being generated in Nigeria is produced by gas-fired power plants. Both the ministers of power and petroleum have often called on Nigerians to help safeguard these infrastructure, but we keep recording explosions of gas pipelines.
“Currently, repairs are ongoing on some of the ruptured pipelines and once they are completed, we believe generation will pick up again.”
Last week, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Anthony Akah, lamented the incidences of vandalism that led to the reduction in peak power generation and supply from the national grid.
Akah, who spoke in Abuja, solicited the support of members of the public and the Consumer Protection Council to collaborate with electricity service providers and security agencies in ensuring adequate protection of power installations across the country.
Similarly, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, told journalists in Abuja on Tuesday that vandalism had been a serious challenge to not just the oil and gas sector, but also the power sector.
Meanwhile, the management of Ikeja Electric has apologised to its customers for the epileptic power supply across its network in the past three days.
The Head of Corporate Communications, Ikeja Electric, Mr. Felix Ofulue, made the apology through a statement on Wednesday.
Ofulue attributed the poor service to the ongoing activities by labour unions picketing the facilities of the company over the purported sacking of 400 workers.
He said the company’s employees were not on strike, but that they had been prevented by the protesting labour unions from gaining access to its facilities and “are, therefore, not in a position to provide any consistent service to our valued customers.”
Ofulue noted that the situation had impacted negatively on power supply as well as the purchase of recharge units because all the substations, business units and undertakings had been taken over by members of the protesting unions.
He said, “Ikeja Electric regrets all inconveniences this action may have caused its customers and appeals to all its customers to please bear with us.
“We assure our customers that the company is doing its best to normalise the situation within the shortest possible time. We thank all our customers for their patience and understanding.”
Power sector workers under the aegis of National Union of Electricity Employees and Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies had on Monday picketed the head office of the Ikeja Electric over the sacking of 400 workers of the company.
The union had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the management of the company last week Tuesday to recall the disengaged workers or face industrial action.

Heavy fighting breaks out between military and Boko Haram
There is a heavy fighting going on at strategic  Bita towmn near Gwoza in Borno state  between Boko Haram and the Military.
The fighting that started last night when insurgents in an attemtp to capture Gwoza attacked a military facility at Bita where they met a stiff resistatnce from the army, went on throughout Monday night and continued Tuesday morning.
The fight was said to have forced the military to deploy fighter jets from Yola to support ground troops who were being overwhelmed.
A source  close to the ongoing war said the quick response by the jets was a big relief to the troops.
Gwoza is one of the Borno twons recaptured from the militants, and some of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the area returned there recently on the assurance that normalcy has been restored to the area

Bismillah, was-Salama ‘alayki wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh;

I will try to answer your questions as well as I can.

I was arrested at my house in the morning, on October 21st. I had just finished making wudu’ for Fajr prayer and was going into my room to pray sunnah when the doorbell rang, followed by a series of loud knocks. My father, who had just gotten dressed for work, was startled at first, but knew who it was. He opened the door, and my house was suddenly filled with about a dozen FBI agents coming up to my room. They were extremely disrespectful to my father as they addressed him. As my mother emerged from the bedroom, I motioned for them to join me in Fajr prayer despite the presence of the FBI agents. So, we stood there and prayed in my room with the agents looking on (maybe they learned a thing or two). I then hugged my parents before I was handcuffed and led down the stairs and out into a waiting police cruiser. I was told that after I was gone, my cat ran down to the door and sat there waiting for me to come back. Loyal animals, ma sha’Allah (awww….).

I was then taken to the local police station and booked, had a mugshot and fingerprints taken, and called home for a few minutes. It was still barely 7:00AM. It was easier to calm my mother down this time because we had been through all of this before around the same time last year.

I was then driven from the local police station to the federal court in the city. The FBI agent who sat next to me in the back was taking a particular interest in how I learned Arabic, as he was in the process of trying to do the same. One should learn to not fall for the “friendly FBI agent” trick—they want only to pull as many statements out of you that they can later put to some legal document to be used against you. The driver wasn’t an FBI agent, but was rather a state trooper. See, the cowboys who go around making these cases and arrests are not solely FBI. They are part of what is called the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), which is a compendium of FBI, customs, state and local police, and other law enforcement agencies that combine their efforts in a focused group whose sole task is to fight Islam, (Oh sorry, I meant ‘terrorism’). They are all over the country.

Once I got to court, I was booked, mugshot, and fingerprinted again, then I was placed in a holding cell for a few hours until my afternoon hearing, where my charge was read out to me vaguely, and I was remanded to the custody of the US Marshalls. Now, the funny thing is that until now, I had no idea what exactly I was being accused of. It was only on my way from court to prison that night that I first heard on the radio the nonsense about malls and whatnot. No comment, really…no comment.

Once I arrived at the prison, I was booked yet a third time, strip-searched (they do that a lot here), and then given my complimentary orange jumpsuit, signaling my entry into the isolation unit. When I was in here last year, I was in population, which is relatively laid back. There were TVs, you could socialize, had plenty of time out of your cell, and so forth. Isolation is where the put you if you are uncontrollable in population, or you’re accused of something big. In isolation, you are on 23-hour lockdown, which means you can only be outside of your cell for one hour each day. You are alone in your cell for those 23-hours, you don’t have the privileges available to other prisoners, such as haircuts, taking classes, access to the library cart, etc. The cells here have one way intercoms, meaning the guard can radio in, but you can’t call out if you need something, while population cells have two-way intercoms. You aren’t visited by a chaplain, and so on. Basically, isolation is a place where you just exist, out of sight, out of mind.

Each cell is basically the size of a small bathroom. In fact imagine your bathroom with a metal toilet, the sink shrunk down and connected to the toilet as a single unit, a metal desk sticking out of the wall, a metal door, a small metal bed sticking out of the opposite wall, and the walls all painted a pale cream color. That is what the cell looks like. There is a narrow window in here, although it doesn’t let in sunlight due to the fact that it faces a gray wall. I do most of everything inside the cell: pray, read, sleep, etc. It is indeed a lovely little abode.

My daily activities here are quite limited. I alternate between praying (this is a great place to get used to more sunnah prayers), adkhar, reading the newspaper, reading a novel someone might slip under my door, writing in my journal, responding to letters, sitting back and thinking, and enjoying my hour of rec-time. You can also travel with your mind (smile).

As I said before, rec time is for exactly an hour a day. Your entertainment options include walking around the perimeter of the tiny unit, calling home, taking a shower, or using the rec-deck. The rec-deck is the closest thing we have in isolation to being able to go outside. It’s essentially a room-sized cage, with one side of cage facing the prison yard, allowing you to see trees, grass, smell fresh air, etc. Through the metal wiring. (hey, it could be worse). Two down-sides to rec-time are that your hour is at different, randomly selected time slots each day, so its hard to coordinate a phone call if someone’s at work, asleep, etc. Also, they don’t tell you ahead of time what time you will be out that day. SO, if you want to do some exercises in your cell in hopes of being able to shower right after, that doesn’t happen down here. They just radio into your cell and say “Rec-time, rec-time,” take it or leave it. The good part of rec (besides the obvious) is that they give you a 15-min warning when your time is almost up, so if you’ve been on the phone and want to shower before having to go back into your cell, that helps you to time yourself.

So, rec-time is the #1 highlight of the day here, mainly because it breaks the routine of being locked in the same cell 23 hours of the day. The second highlight of the day is mealtime. Mealtimes are useful for me in a way they aren’t for anyone else. See, in isolation, there is no way to know what time it is. They forbid watches or clocks of any kind here. However, I do know that officially, breakfast is served around 5:30AM, lunch around noontime, and dinner around 4:30PM. That way, I can know when to pray Fajr, Dhuhr, and Maghrib. I just estimate when ‘Asr and ‘Isha’ come in.

Meals are slid in through a slot in our doors. The food isn’t what you’d eat at home or out with friends, but its food and I’m grateful for it. Breakfast is usually some cereal or oatmeal, along with a small apple and milk. Lunch is usually steamed vegetables, two slices of white toast, a slice of “meat” and some potatoes or macaroni. Dinner is the same, except for what we call Fish Fridays, where we actually get something recognizable: a real fish sandwich similar to something you’d get at McDonald’s or something (see, they like to spoil us every so often). Judging by the portions we get for each meal, it seems the nutritionists at this fine institution are trying to strictly stick to the minimum 2,200 calorie daily requirement.

When I complete my daily dining experience, I pull out my ‘Maximum Security Toothpaste” (I’m not joking—that’s what it really says on the tube), and brush to my heart’s content with the eerie 2-inch long object that they tell me is supposed to be a toothbrush, although it really doesn’t reach many of my teeth without major effort.

Each wing of the each unit has what’s referred to as a runner. A runner is an inmate who’s already been sentenced, and volunteers to do the cleaning duties for the whole wing in return from more rec-time. The runner on my wing is cool, a Bosnian Croat. The nice thing about having a runner is that since they have to sweep the whole wing, they stop by every cell. That means I can chat with him every day, and we often get into some good conversations about Yugoslav politics and history. He is also instrumental in providing me with a daily copy of the newspaper. Of course my conversations with him take place from behind my cell door, but its one of the rare forms of interaction with others that are possible down here. So, al-hamdulillah.

Sometimes, some guards will stop while doing their rounds and have a couple of words with me, trying to have their own assessment of the Big Bad Terrorist, after what they’ve come across in the media. It was interesting to see their reactions when they discovered that I had no accent, that I was educated, polite, that I ate food, slept at night, and did all of the things that normal humans do. One of them, an ex-Marine, is pretty cool with me now and admits that after his few conversations with me, he’s finding it harder and harder to buy what he’s read in the news, and jokingly remarked that he’s now playing the part of my defense lawyer to the other guards in the unit. It is very easy to cause a stereotype, but it is also very easy to break one. Even in this unit, there are varying levels to how many restrictions are placed on a segregation inmate. For a while, I was on the highest level of restriction, which included full restraints. Full restraints means that whenever I was out of my cell, even for rec-time, I had my hands and feet shackled, then tied together—while I was on the phone, walking to the shower, walking around the unit—everything. Obviously, the impression the prison administration had from the media was the cause, as well as whatever they were told by the FBI. After awhile, I had a meeting with the captain of the unit, and the same thing occurred: once he had a personal encounter and conversation, observed my behavior, and got a more accurate assessment of who I was and why I was really here, they decided to take me off the full restraints, wal-hamdulillah.

There are obvious inconveniences associated with being in a place like this, but I’ll just mention two. The first is the total lack of a pleasant scent. Obviously, we have no cologne, musk, or anything like that. You are in a place that is meant to be dull, unpleasant, unstimulating, bland. The color of the walls, the color of your food, your clothes, accessories—everything is devoid of attraction. The smell in the air is always the same. Nothing to refresh you or enliven your senses. May Allah reward some of the brothers who wrote to me and were kind enough to rub some musk on the pages of their letters so that I could indulge from time to time.

The second annoyance is that I am surrounded by vulgarity and obscenity. Hearing other inmates yell out to each other from cell to cell, the majority of their conversations revolve around filthy topics, and it seems that the majority of their vocabularies consist of curses. It is to the point that the inmates here who are allowed to have rec-time together and play chess will refer to the Queen as “the b*@ch.” That gets to you after a while, especially when you’re used to being around pure, well-mannered brothers on a daily basis.

There was one inmate who I must credit with doing something to counter this. We will call him Nelson. Nelson had a very soft voice, and he thus saw it fit to constantly permeate the air with his renditions of his favorite Whitney Houston and Celine Dion classics. He would basically sing the unit to sleep every night, and wake us up in the morning with his singing. Most of the other guys in the unit were having none of that and would constantly scream at him to shut up. The more they would scream, the louder he would sing, which made them scream louder, and so on. Finally, they wrote a complaint to the unit captain, who came in and said: “Nelson, you have to stop singing.” Nelson said nothing. As soon as the captain was out the door, Nelson launched into another song. Eventually, the guards came in and transferred him to another unit. Poor Nelson. He was just trying to deal with the stress of isolation in the way he knew best…

Anyway, I thought I’d close with a poem I wrote recently, called:

“A Race Against Fate”

In a race against fate, they struggle to contain
The light of truth from making gain after gain
Sitting in this cell, I can never complain
While countless other victims are sharing my pain

Victims of a regime that stands confused
Of what will befall it after all it has abused
Despite its claimed virtues over those it has accused
It nullifies its claim with the tactics it has used

They tortured one brother into a painful mess
Until his torture forced him to falsely confess
Life in Supermax for what he said under duress
Seems to be acceptable in the present-day U.S.

And our sister, our pearl, a cover-up gone wrong
Imprisoned by her captors for six years too long
Shot twice in the stomach and still remaining strong
Sleeps in a prison cell where pearls don’t belong

And the scientist, the doctor, the scholar with a plight
They claimed they got him because he urged others to fight
The truth is that he never spoke out of fright
And his persecutors wanted to extinguish his light

The examples are many, but this is just a taste
Of those whose suffering should not go to waste
To helping the oppressed, let us run in haste
It is towards this goal that true men have raced

And remove from yourself the shackles of fear
And make their agenda abundantly clear
With honor, let us defend what we hold dear
Our beliefs, and our brethren—we must start from here

Until when will our sons be dragged from their beds
To be handcuffed and kidnapped by invading Feds
Before our mothers can even cover their heads
It’s the new McCarthyism, and we are the Reds

If you speak out against this, you’re a ‘terrorist’
The black label reserved for those who resist
It doesn’t really matter how much you insist
That you’re no monster, they will always persist

In the deception they have managed to master so well
That only the fair-minded are able to tell
That this plan that could’ve only been hatched in Hell
Is for all who speak up to be thrown in a cell

They think they are ‘free,’ but they are truly constrained
The thirst for oppression leaves their humanity restrained
In the end, they will see that all they have gained
Is the attention of He who defense those they have chained…

… was-salamu ‘alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh
